- Bessent spoke about the US margin of 10% for weapons supplied to Ukraine at the expense of Europe
The United States supplies weapons to Ukraine with a 10% markup, paid for by European countries. This was announced on August 19 by United States Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent in an interview with Fox News channel.
"I think the President [of the United States Donald] Trump is very vigilant right now. We sell weapons to the Europeans, who then sell them to the Ukrainians, and President Trump takes a 10% mark—up on weapons, so maybe this 10% will cover the cost of air cover," he said.
The Correspondent gave a corresponding answer to a journalist who asked whether a possible "air cover" from the United States in Ukraine would be paid for at the expense of American taxpayers.
Earlier that day, Bloomberg learned about the readiness of about 10 countries to send troops to Ukraine. It is noted that the prerequisite for such plans was the meeting of the leaders of the European Union (EU) with Trump at the White House, which confirmed the commitment of the United States to security guarantees. At the same time, the nature of possible American support for such initiatives remains unclear.
Prior to this, White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said that Trump intends to achieve a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible. According to her, I and the United States are discussing with Russia and Ukraine the place where the meeting between Putin and Zelensky will take place.
