- Bloomberg reported on the call between Trump and Orban on Ukraine's membership in the EU
US President Donald Trump has called Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Ukraine's membership in the European Union (EU). This was reported on August 19 by the Bloomberg newspaper, citing sources.
"US President Donald Trump called Viktor Orban on Monday after talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders to discuss why the Hungarian Prime Minister is blocking negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union," the publication said.
According to the newspaper, Hungary did not give a clear comment on Trump's call. However, according to Bloomberg, Hungary has expressed interest in holding the next round of talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky.
Earlier, on August 12, Orban said that the European Union (EU) is currently in a difficult situation, so accepting Ukraine could have an even more negative impact on it, as well as result in Hungary entering the "path of impoverishment." Orban suggested that if Ukraine becomes part of the EU, Hungary's agriculture could suffer losses and decline. In addition, as the Prime Minister suggested, this decision by Brussels will entail the loss of jobs in his country.
On August 10, Orban said that European leaders should support US President Donald Trump's efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict at a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on August 15. He clarified that the American leader wants to achieve peace, which is why he has scheduled a meeting with the Russian president.
