Trump intends to achieve a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible.
US President Donald Trump intends to achieve a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible. This was announced on August 19 at a briefing to reporters by White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt.
"He [Trump] wants to see an end to this conflict. <...> The president wants to move forward and end this conflict as soon as possible," Leavitt said.
According to the press secretary, the United States is discussing with Russia and Ukraine the place where Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky will meet.
"There are many options that are currently being discussed by our national security team with both sides," Leavitt said.
Leavitt also commented on the talks with Putin in Anchorage and with Zelensky and the leaders of the European Union (EU) countries, calling both meetings successful and productive.
Earlier in the day, Leavitt said that the United States would discuss with Russia acceptable security guarantees for Ukraine. The White House spokeswoman noted that the United States does not intend to deploy its troops in Ukraine as part of providing it with security guarantees. Leavitt also added that the United States does not rule out air support as a guarantee of security.
Also on this day, the American leader said that the transition of Crimea to Ukraine was impossible, as was its accession to NATO. Trump added that security guarantees for Ukraine cannot include the protection of the alliance, but the United States will be ready to help European countries with this.
On August 18, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump met at the White House. The closed-door talks lasted about 30 minutes. After that, the American and Ukrainian presidents talked with the leaders of the European Union countries.
The meeting between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Trump took place on August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska. During a joint press conference, the Russian president noted the desire of his colleague from the United States to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Trump, in turn, shared that the negotiations went very well and called the summit in Alaska wonderful.
