The US Senate is ready, contrary to the position of the American leader Donald Trump, to impose sanctions against Russia in order to keep it at the negotiating table. This was reported on August 19 by The Washington Post (WP) newspaper with reference to the leader of the Republican majority in the upper house of Congress, John Thune.

"Tune reminded the president that the Senate is ready to provide any economic levers necessary to keep Russia at the negotiating table for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine," the article says.

The Republican was referring to the sanctions bill, which has received broad bipartisan support and gives Trump the right to tighten sanctions against Russia if he decides that Russian President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate.

The authors of the article recall that following the meeting of the Russian and American leaders in Alaska, Trump publicly rejected the possibility of imposing sanctions against Russia.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said on August 14 that Trump does not want to impose new sanctions against Russia in light of the conflict in Ukraine, and his policy priority is diplomacy. She noted that the American leader has every opportunity to take restrictions and "many other measures" to influence Moscow, but he can take such steps only if a situation really arises that is forced to do so.

The meeting between Putin and Trump took place on August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska. During a joint press conference, the Russian president noted the desire of his colleague from the United States to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Trump, in turn, shared that the negotiations went very well and called the summit in Alaska wonderful.
