Mikhail Spiridonov, one of the founders of marine geology, has died in St. Petersburg. This was announced on August 19 by the press service of the governor's administration.
"Mikhail Alexandrovich Spiridonov, an outstanding geologist and a full member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, has passed away. I express my deep condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and students," the publication on the website says.
Mikhail Spiridonov worked for almost 70 years at the A.P. Karpinsky All-Russian Scientific Research Geological Institute, where he became one of the founders of marine geology. His scientific work proved to be a significant contribution to the study and development of offshore fields, on which the economic development of the country depends. At the moment, his developments in the field of geological foundations of coastal protection are used to solve environmental issues while preserving ecosystems.
In addition, the scientist has been lecturing in St. Petersburg for over 20 years.‑St. Petersburg State University and the Mining University, also engaged in the training of graduate students.
