A Class M flare lasting 50 minutes occurred on the Sun.
An outbreak of the penultimate power level, Class M, occurred in the Sun, which lasted 50 minutes. The relevant information was published on August 19 on the official website of the Institute of Applied Geophysics named after Academician E.K. Fedorov (IPG).
"On August 19 at 07.39 Moscow time <...> An M1.1 flash lasting 50 minutes has been registered," the statement said.
It is noted that moderate solar activity is expected in the next few days, but there may also be Class X flares. According to the institute, the geomagnetic field will be unstable.
Earlier, on August 15, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the IKI RAS reported that a large coronal hole is forming on the Sun, which can cause an increase in the speed of the solar wind and lead to an aggravation of the geomagnetic situation. It was noted that due to the growth of the coronal hole, the solar wind velocity will exceed the values by about 2-2.5 times, which may worsen the geomagnetic situation for 7-10 days.
