- The orientalist pointed to the temporary nature of the armistice agreement between Israel and Hamas.
The 60-day truce agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement, reached with the assistance of Egypt and Qatar, is temporary. This was stated on August 19 by political analyst Dmitry Brije to Izvestia.
On August 18, Hamas officially confirmed that the mediators had received a positive response to the proposal for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.
"This is a time window in which the parties are trying to solve tactical tasks: exchanging hostages for prisoners, stabilizing the humanitarian situation, reducing international pressure, but not a way to eliminate the fundamental contradictions that are observed in principle. And without this, of course, there is no way to resolve the situation in the Gaza Strip, and there is no way to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," the expert said.
He noted that this agreement reflects a delicate balance, as it is known that Israel seeks to return its citizens, while showing brutality. Hamas is looking for political recognition and time to regroup.
In addition, Bridge said that mediators such as Egypt and Qatar are trying to strengthen their role in the region, while the United States, under the leadership of American leader Donald Trump, is seeking to demonstrate its ability to control the crisis and prevent it from escalating into a regional war.
The expert also drew attention to the fact that the situation in the Gaza Strip remains tense, adding that deep distrust and lack of a clear strategy for the future create problems both inside Israel and among the Palestinian society.
As for possible scenarios after the end of the armistice, the orientalist identified several options.
"Firstly, it is an extension of the pause and a gradual de-escalation. If the parties are able to implement a hostage exchange and open humanitarian corridors, the mediators can extend the agreement for another 30-60 days. The second option is a series of temporary truces, which can also lead to uncertainty. This model is beneficial to intermediaries, but it is dangerous because any failure quickly returns the situation to the military phase," said Brydje.
The expert called the possibility of a return to full-scale war a third option. He explained that if the parties do not achieve significant results during the truce, public opinion will perceive it as fiction. In this case, the fighting may resume with the same force.
On August 16, the Israeli authorities put forward a number of conditions to the Palestinian movement, under which Tel Aviv would be ready to conclude a cease-fire deal. Among the demands are that Hamas supporters lay down their arms and simultaneously release all hostages, the demilitarization of the entire territory of the Gaza Strip, which will be controlled by the Israeli army, and a change of government, the new representatives of which will peacefully side with Israel.
