The CIS expressed hope for the end of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan
The countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) welcome the declaration signed in the United States between Armenia and Azerbaijan and look forward to a final settlement of differences between the countries. This was stated on August 19 by Sergey Lebedev, Secretary General of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the CIS countries, before a meeting of the Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representatives of the CIS member states to the statutory and other bodies of the association.
According to him, after the signing of the joint declaration between Azerbaijan and Armenia, telephone conversations took place between the leaders of the Commonwealth countries, during which they discussed this issue.
"Just as we all in the Commonwealth countries were pleased with the signing of the treaty on the interstate border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, so now we are very pleased with the signing of this joint declaration in the Commonwealth countries," Sputnik Armenia quoted Lebedev as saying.
The Secretary General expressed the opinion that the signing of the agreement between the countries is one of the stages on the way to the final settlement of disagreements and the achievement of a peace treaty. He also noted that this step would allow the CIS countries to more fully hold meetings of the supreme bodies of the association on the territory of these republics.
"And these republics, I hope so much as the Secretary General, can participate more actively in the activities of the CIS," he concluded.
Earlier, on August 8, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a declaration on the peaceful settlement of the conflict. During the meeting in Washington, they agreed to end the confrontation and resume diplomatic relations. Later, Pashinyan said that Yerevan and Baku established peace by signing documents in the United States.
Later, on August 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a telephone conversation with Pashinyan, expressed his readiness to contribute to the normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan. In addition, the Russian leader stressed the importance of steps that contribute to ensuring sustainable peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
