Zakharova called the Finnish president's words about the "1944 decision" "hell"
On August 19, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned a statement by Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who compared the possible settlement of the Ukrainian conflict with the 1944 Moscow Armistice signed between the USSR and Finland.
At the beginning of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and European leaders and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the White House, Stubb expressed confidence that a solution to the conflict would be found in 2025, as it was found in 1944.
"The big question is, did Stubb understand all the hell of his remark?" Zakharova wrote on her Telegram channel.
She recalled that during the Second World War, Finland fought against the Soviet Union on the side of Nazi Germany and was responsible for participating in the siege of Leningrad and the creation of concentration camps. According to her, the "interaction experience" that Stubb was talking about was related to support for the Third Reich and crimes against civilians.
She also noted that in 1944 Finland signed the Moscow Armistice only under pressure from the Red Army, after its victorious offensive.
"Helsinki renounced [Adolf] Hitler and the Nazis, joined the war on the side of the USSR, and the Lapland War began. Yesterday's Finnish allies turned their guns on Nazi Germany. Historians are sure Finland had no choice. The victorious Red Army began to sweep away the Reich and its allies along the entire front line, the cunning Finns decided to conclude a separate peace with the USSR in order not to be a defeated country following the results of World War II," Zakharova stressed.
The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that if Stubb really wants to act as in 1944, he should act "against his recent Nazi allies and start opposing the Kiev regime."
The day before, Stubb tried to justify himself and said that his words about finding a solution to the conflict in Ukraine by analogy with Finland in 1944 did not imply territorial concessions from Kiev. According to him, Finland retained its independence in 1944, but lost some of its sovereignty and territories.
