- FT learned about Ukraine's promise to buy $100 billion worth of weapons from the United States
Ukraine has promised the United States to purchase $100 billion worth of weapons for security guarantees after the conflict is resolved. This was reported on August 18 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.
"Ukraine will promise to purchase $100 billion worth of American weapons, funded by Europe, in an attempt to obtain US security guarantees after a peaceful settlement with Russia," the publication says.
US President Donald Trump has said that Russia is not against Ukraine receiving security guarantees. The American leader said this on August 18 at a meeting with the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, and the heads of European states at the White House.
Zelensky and Trump met at the White House on August 18. The closed-door talks lasted about 30 minutes. After that, Zelensky and Trump met with the leaders of the European Union countries.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French Leader Emmanuel Macron are taking part in the meeting. Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni and Finnish President Alexander Stubb are also present.
On the same day, Rutte said that no specific territorial concessions to Ukraine had been discussed during the extended talks with Trump at the White House. He noted that supplies of American weapons, which were paid for by NATO member countries, will continue to Ukraine.
