Bolivia wants to approve lithium project with Russia by November
The Ministry of Energy of Bolivia expects to obtain approval of an agreement on the construction of a lithium carbonate plant jointly with the Russian Federation before the end of the term of office of the current President Luis Arce. This was stated to Izvestia by Freddy Gustavo Velasquez Robles, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Energy for Planning and Energy Development.
"This week we will conduct the necessary analysis and consultations to speed up the approval of the agreements. But we also don't want protests in the country from those who disagree with this decision," he said.
In September 2024, a subsidiary of Rosatom State Corporation and the Bolivian state-owned enterprise YLB (Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos) signed an agreement to build a plant in the Uyuni salt marsh. The project involves the production of 14 thousand tons of lithium carbonate per year. The agreement is awaiting approval in the upper and lower houses of parliament, after which construction of the plant can begin.
