Engineers at the Moscow Aviation Institute have developed an active gas dynamic system that helps protect aircraft engines from dust and debris particles.

According to experts, the implementation of the development will make it possible to safely operate regional and mainline aircraft at airports with an underdeveloped airfield infrastructure. This includes aprons and unpaved runways.

"It is assumed that the air for the operation of the system will be taken directly from the engine — from a low-pressure compressor. (This mechanism also ensures the operation of the air conditioning system in the aircraft). Then the jets are sent through special channels to the vortex formation zone," Ilya Ushakov, the author of the development, a graduate student at the Department of Design and Certification of Aviation Technology at MAI, explained to Izvestia.

As a result, he added, an air curtain is created that cuts off particles trying to get inside the power plant.

According to the developer, when designing the system, it is calculated in such a way that the implementation requires a minimum number of changes and improvements to the aircraft design.
