The idea of a possible deployment of NATO troops on the territory of Ukraine is unacceptable to Russia. This was announced on August 18 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"We confirm our repeatedly voiced position on our categorical rejection of any scenarios involving the appearance of a military contingent in Ukraine with the participation of NATO countries, which is fraught with an uncontrolled escalation of the conflict with unpredictable consequences," the Russian Foreign Ministry's press service quoted her as saying on the Telegram channel.

Zakharova noted that such intentions of the European Union (EU) countries and the UK demonstrate "provocative and predatory" plans for Ukraine. According to her, such a position is actually an incitement to the continuation of the conflict.

The diplomat called on London to abandon such risky and "unproductive steps" and, at a minimum, "not to interfere with the painstaking work of Russian and American negotiators."

Former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on August 17 that the European Union was forced to accept its secondary role in resolving the conflict in Ukraine due to an illiterate strategy. For example, Europe refused to start negotiations with Moscow in a timely manner and made "erroneous bets."

Also on the same day, Michele Geraci, former Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Italy, told Izvestia that Europe, by supporting Ukraine, had independently deprived itself of the role of mediator in resolving the conflict.
