The US Ambassador to NATO spoke about financing security guarantees for Kiev
Security guarantees for Ukraine will have to be funded by European countries. This was announced on August 18 by the US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker.
"And therefore, if they (Ukrainians - Ed.) want to achieve lasting peace, they understand that they will need a security system, and it will be provided and funded by the Europeans," Whitaker told Fox News.
He also added that security guarantees for Ukraine do not necessarily mean the deployment of American troops on its territory.
Earlier in the day, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Ukraine could agree to territorial concessions in return for security guarantees. He clarified that Kiev does not recognize the territories under the sovereignty of the Russian Federation, but recognizes their loss as a result of the fighting.
Prior to that, on August 16, The Wall Street Journal learned about the readiness of US President Donald Trump to provide "security guarantees" to Ukraine. It was noted that after the conversation with Trump, the EU leaders welcomed the president's words about his intention to provide these guarantees.
