The European Commission (EC) will oblige Estonia to pay €1.7 million in case of refusal to accept 79 refugees in 2026. This was reported on August 18 by ERR broadcasting company with reference to the head of the Department of Border Protection and Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Estonia, Janek Migi.

"The Estonian government is facing a three—way choice this autumn between accepting 79 refugees, sending experts to southern European countries to help with the refugee situation, or paying a €1.7 million fine," the publication says.

According to the channel, last year the member states of the European Union (EU) agreed on a new migration package, according to which the EC plans to redistribute up to 30,000 refugees, mainly from the Middle East and North Africa, between the member states of the union in 2026-2027.

It is clarified that other EU member states find themselves in a similar situation. In particular, Lithuania must accept 158 refugees or pay €3 million.

According to Maga, the government's decision will be made by the end of the year. If Estonia refuses to accept refugees, it will be able to transfer assistance to EU members, for example, to send experts and equipment capable of facilitating the refugee registration process to Southern European countries.

On August 3, the leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Markus Zeder, called for the complete abolition of unemployment benefits to Ukrainian refugees in Germany. He added that he wants to put this proposal up for discussion in the country's ruling coalition, as, according to him, Germany gives too much to Ukrainian refugees and therefore they practically do not work, but sit on benefits.
