The Slovak authorities cannot prohibit the supply of military equipment to Ukraine to private arms companies. This was announced on August 18 by the State Secretary of the country's defense ministry, Igor Melikher.

"We joined the European Union because of the values we share. We also respect the free market. Therefore, it would be quite hypocritical on our part to restrict the enterprises of the military-industrial complex," Politico quoted him as saying.

At the same time, he stressed that most of the equipment that is produced in the country is not delivered to Ukraine, but is sold to Western partners, who independently decide how to dispose of it.

In addition, Melikher noted that the country's authorities promised in their manifesto not to send "a single bullet" to Ukraine. According to him, the government "fulfills its promises." He explained that official assistance consists of non-lethal aid and electricity supplies, which are necessary for Ukraine's functioning.

The Aktuality portal reported on July 29 that Slovakia had not handed over to Ukraine seven Zuzana-2 howitzers out of 16, which it was supposed to send back in 2024. This is due to the termination of cooperation with the Ukrainian plant and questionable decisions of the Slovak Ministry of Defense during the last government of the European Republic.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on April 16 that Bratislava does not intend to join the mechanisms for the purchase of weapons for Kiev. The politician pointed out that under the current conditions, it is absolutely necessary to resume transit of Russian gas through Ukraine as soon as possible.
