The judoka declared benefits of massage at weight loss
Various types of massage can have a temporary effect of reducing volume, but this is not associated with the loss of adipose tissue. On August 21, Egor Malkin, a judo athlete from the Otechestvo Martial Arts Society, told Izvestia about whether massage can help you lose weight without dieting and training.
"The physiological effect of massage is to improve blood circulation and lymph flow, which helps to remove excess fluid from the tissues. This may create the appearance of a 1-2 cm reduction in volume after the first procedures, but the effect will be temporary," Malkin explained.
The expert emphasized that massage does not destroy fat cells and cannot be compared in effectiveness with physical exertion. To burn 500 g of fat, a deficit of about 3,500 kcal is required, whereas an hour of intensive massage consumes only 100-150 kcal — the equivalent of a 20-25-minute walk.
At the same time, Malkin noted that regular massage treatments can improve the condition of the skin, increase its elasticity and reduce the feeling of heaviness in the legs. Combined with physical activity and proper nutrition, massage can really accelerate visible results by reducing swelling.
"Promises to lose 5 kg during a massage course are usually associated with fluid loss, not fat loss. It is a mistake to perceive massage as the main method of weight loss. This can be a useful addition, but not a substitute for training and diet adjustments," the athlete concluded.
On August 10, Melissa Mroz-Planells, a nutritionist and expert at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told how late meals can affect metabolism and contribute to weight gain. According to her, if we eat late at night, our digestive system doesn't work as efficiently as it does during the day, and this can lead to fat accumulation and even cause weight problems in the long run.
