German Chancellor Friedrich Merz needs to definitively rule out speculation that a contingent of German military personnel could be deployed in Ukraine. This was announced on August 18 by Sarah Wagenknecht's Union for Reason and Justice (BSW) party leader Sarah Wagenknecht.

She made her statement ahead of the upcoming meeting of European leaders with US President Donald Trump in Washington.

"In the event of a conflict, Germany would immediately become a party to the conflict, which the chancellor cannot allow," the DPA news agency quoted her as saying.

The politician added that one should not assume that Russia will agree to the deployment of NATO forces in Ukraine. German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl agrees with her. He is skeptical about the idea of sending German soldiers to Ukraine, believing that such a move "is likely to destroy Germany."

"But this does not mean that we cannot provide Ukraine with support in other military and technical ways," DPA quoted him as saying.

On August 18, Alice Weidel, leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, also called on Merz to start a dialogue with Russia to normalize bilateral relations. According to her, the Chancellor's "euphoria" regarding NATO security guarantees for Kiev actually means sending German soldiers to the territory of Ukraine.

On August 16, Merz said that the government of Ukraine can count on the "unwavering solidarity" of European countries in achieving peace. In addition, the Chancellor expressed support for Trump's efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.
