- The Ukrainian Armed Forces' attack on the Smolensk NPP was called unacceptable at the NPP
The attempt by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to attack the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is unacceptable and dangerous. This was announced on August 18 by Evgeniya Yashina, Director of Communications at Zaporizhia NPP.
"This incident once again demonstrates with the utmost clarity the absolutely unacceptable and extremely dangerous practice when nuclear power facilities become targets," she said in an interview with TASS.
Yashina expressed her support to colleagues at the Smolensk NPP and noted that the absence of casualties and damage to the plant's power units is the main result. As the representative of the NPP noted, nuclear power plants are critical infrastructure facilities containing sources of potential radiation hazard.
"Any deliberate impact on them, whether it's a UAV attack, artillery shelling or other military actions, carries enormous risks," Yashina said.
The Director of Communications at ZAES recalled that the consequences of a potential accident could be "catastrophic" for the population of the nearest regions and the environment, as well as international nuclear safety.
A day earlier, the Russian FSB prevented a Ukrainian UAV attack on the Smolensk NPP. It was clarified that the UAV of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was eliminated with the help of electronic warfare (EW) forces. The Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation has opened a criminal case on a terrorist attack involving an encroachment on nuclear energy facilities.
Later, the Rosatom State Corporation reported that all three power units of the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant were operating normally. Rosatom stressed that attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on peaceful nuclear facilities are extremely dangerous, senseless and irresponsible.
