The Kuril landing operation played a huge role in ending World War II and freeing the peoples of Asia from the threat of extermination and enslavement. This was stated on August 18 in an address by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the occasion of the opening of a memorial complex in honor of the liberator soldiers on Shumshu Island.

The text of the document was read out at the ceremony by Sergey Kiriyenko, First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation.

"I welcome you on the occasion of the opening of the celebrations dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Kuril landing operation, the Victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II. Our country made a decisive contribution to the defeat of Nazism, and after the victorious conclusion of the Great Patriotic War, it fully fulfilled its allied duty," TASS quotes the message.
