On August 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) on its 180th anniversary.
He thanked the representatives of the Russian Geographical Society for their discoveries and heroic expeditions, which gave mankind a huge amount of knowledge about Eurasia, the Pacific region, as well as about the Arctic and Antarctica.
"The contribution of this legendary organization to the development and strengthening of the Russian state, to its scientific and military triumph, and to the increase of national wealth is, without any exaggeration, enormous," Putin said.
In addition, the Russian president said that thanks to the Russian Geographical Society, the country has become one of the leaders in the areas of balanced development and use of natural resources and the formation of global transport routes.
He also noted that it was the Russian Geographical Society that was the founder of environmental protection, as well as the universal population census and the systematic collection of ethnographic data.
According to him, this is only a small part of all the achievements of the representatives of the Russian Geographical Society. Putin added that now, as throughout its history, the society organizes expeditions and implements various educational projects.
In addition, the President of the Russian Federation expressed his gratitude to all the scientists who faithfully serve earth science. Putin also thanked the Board of Trustees and the media Council of the Russian Geographical Society, which help the citizens of the country make their dreams come true.
The festival of the Russian Geographical Society started in Moscow on July 12. It lasted until July 20, and its theme this year was "The Wonders of Russia." Lectures, performances by creative teams and master classes were prepared for the guests.
