Von der Leyen stated the need for security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe

The head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, said on August 17 that Europe and Ukraine need security guarantees.

"We must have reliable security guarantees to protect the vital interests of both Ukraine and Europe. Ukraine must be able to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity," she said at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Brussels.

According to the head of the EC, Ukraine should become "a steel porcupine, inconvenient for potential invaders."
