Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with American leader Donald Trump in Alaska, demanded guarantees for the restoration of the status of the Russian language in Ukraine. This was reported on August 17 by The New York Times (NYT), citing European officials.

"Putin also demanded guarantees that Russian will become an official language in Ukraine again," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, the Russian president also demanded guarantees for the safety of Russian Orthodox churches.

July 19, Ukrainian edition of "Country.ua" reported that the Commissioner for the Protection of the state language of Ukraine, Elena Ivanovskaya, demanded that the special status of the Russian language in the country's Constitution be abolished as a "tool of destabilization." She stated that in the context of the ongoing conflict, the Russian language in Ukraine is allegedly "not only a means of communication, but also an instrument of destabilization" of the situation in the country.
