Joining the European Union (EU) may not be attractive for successful countries at the moment. This was announced on August 16 by Mikhail Ulyanov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to International Organizations in Vienna.

"In the current circumstances, the EU can hardly be attractive to more or less successful candidates," reads a post on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

Ulyanov responded accordingly to the publication of the Irish journalist Brian McDonald, who attached a map of Europe, under the heading "Who most wants to join the EU?". In this image, countries such as Ukraine, Norway, Turkey, Georgia, Switzerland and others are highlighted in blue.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Pesov pointed out on July 25 that the EU was losing economic power and political influence. He also noted that these factors also indicate that the countries of the alliance are deprived of sovereignty.

Former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl said on August 7 that the EU's problems were caused by internal causes, which is why there is a "rift" in the union.
