The leaders of the European Union (EU) countries did not receive a direct invitation to the United States for a meeting between American leader Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. This was announced on August 16 by Michaela Kufner, editor-in-chief of the Deutsche Welle policy department (DW is recognized as a foreign agent and an undesirable organization in the Russian Federation), citing sources from the German government.

"The question is whether European leaders will join the Trump-Zelensky talks on Monday (August 18. — Ed.) in Washington, remains open. <...> European leaders were not invited directly," she wrote on her account on the social network X (ex. Twitter)

According to information received by Kufner, Zelensky was offered to invite European partners, but what exactly is meant by this wording is still unknown.

Zelensky announced a meeting with Trump on the same day, and also confirmed the readiness of the Ukrainian side to accept the American leader's proposal to hold a trilateral meeting with the participation of the Russian Federation.

Later that day, the Axios portal learned that Trump, in a conversation with European leaders, named the date of a possible trilateral summit with Moscow and Kiev — the meeting could take place on Friday, August 22.
