US President Donald Trump, applauding Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was coming to meet him, intended to defuse the situation before the start of negotiations. This was announced on August 16 by body language expert Chris Ulrich.

"Remember, when Trump steps on the carpet, he waits. <...> He makes contact and allows you to defuse the situation with cotton," he said in an interview with CNN.

This, as Ulrich clarified, was a very important non—verbal moment, as key as the first handshake of leaders - these are the moments of establishing contact.

When Trump extended a "very open" hand to Putin, it was, as the expert noted, a hard-to-read, but nevertheless a signal that made it clear that negotiations had already started. The handshake, during which the Russian and American leaders smiled while maintaining eye contact, was an element of reverence.

CNN, which analyzed the "body language" of Putin and Trump at the time of their meeting, called this scene "far from cold" on August 15. They noticed that when the Russian and American delegations sat down at the negotiating table, Putin "gave" smiles to those present.

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Earl Rasmussen told Izvestia on August 16 that the presidents had demonstrated mutual respect during the meeting. He noted that the leaders sincerely strive to put an end to the conflict in Ukraine, which is hindered by European countries that are members of NATO.
