Merz noted the important role of the United States in resolving the Ukrainian crisis
So far, the United States, not European countries, has played a decisive role in resolving the Ukrainian conflict. This was stated on August 16 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in an interview with ZDF TV channel.
"The unity of Europe is very important, but for now the decisive role in this conflict will be played by the United States, the President of America [Donald Trump], who has military force and appropriate sanctions in his hands," the head of the German government said.
According to him, the good news following the results of contacts with the American leader is the guarantees of security for Kiev. He also noted that Europe will play a role in the negotiations on Ukraine, which will continue on Monday, but it should not overestimate itself.
On the same day, Merz declared Europe's solidarity on the issue of Ukraine. In addition, he expressed support for Trump's efforts to resolve the crisis and achieve peace.
The United States' desire for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine was also noted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who met with Trump in Alaska on August 15. As the head of state stressed, Russia is also interested in ending the conflict in Ukraine, but this requires eliminating all the root causes of the crisis.
