During telephone talks with European leaders, US President Donald Trump discussed the possibility of providing Ukraine with security guarantees similar to Article 5 of the NATO Charter. CNN reported this on August 16, citing a source.

According to the channel, such guarantees can be provided with the support of the United States and EU countries in the event of a peace agreement, while there will be no direct participation of NATO in them.

It is noted that Article 5 of the NATO Charter provides for the collective defense of the alliance states: an attack on one or more members is considered an attack on the entire alliance. The specific details of the proposed guarantees are still unknown, and it remains unclear how they will be implemented, CNN reports.

Earlier, the channel noted that Trump did not seek to commit to using the US armed forces or resources to protect Ukraine.

The meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump took place on August 15 at the American military base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, and lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes. During the press conference following the meeting, the Russian leader noted the American leader's desire to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Putin added that Russia is also interested in this, but first it is necessary to solve all the root causes of the crisis. The press conference ended without answering the journalists' questions.

Trump, in turn, pointed to the great progress made during the negotiations. In an interview with Fox News, he also described the meeting with Putin in Anchorage as very good. According to him, there is a "fairly high probability" of concluding an agreement to resolve the situation in Ukraine.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
