Italy pointed to the mediocre role of the EU in resolving the Ukrainian conflict
By siding with Kiev, Europe has effectively deprived itself of its role as a mediator in resolving the Ukrainian conflict. This was stated on August 16 in an interview with Izvestia by Michele Geraci, former Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Italy.
"The European Union decided to withdraw from the game three years ago by siding with Ukraine, and not only because, as you know, some countries may side with Ukraine, some with Russia, this is in a sense normal, but it was their position and the tone of the comments that actually deprived them. the opportunity to play a mediating role between Russia, Ukraine and the United States," Geraci said.
According to Geraci, the priority for Russian President Vladimir Putin at the talks in Alaska was to explain Moscow's position to his American counterpart Donald Trump.
"We are on the verge of disappearing from the unipolar world, the hegemonic world that dominated in the 1990s for the last 20-30 years, and now we have a multipolar world with Russia, China, India, the Global South, BRICS, the Belt and Road Initiative, and so on," Geraci explained.
According to the former Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Italy, we are talking about the integrity and survival of Russia — Putin cannot allow Ukraine's membership in NATO.
"Now the EU is really isolated, without friends, without friendship with Russia, without friendship with the United States. Without friendship with China. This is a very bad economic and political situation," Geraci concluded.
Earlier in the day, the leader of the French Patriots party, Florian Philippot, said that European commentators were enraged by the successful meeting between Putin and Trump in Alaska. According to him, the wall between the two countries has finally fallen, and this is a historic event.
