On August 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin, after completing negotiations with US President Donald Trump, visited the Anchorage Memorial Cemetery, where he talked with American Orthodox priest Alexy and presented him with two icons as a gift — an icon of Herman of Alaska and an icon of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

"I want to convey to you the best wishes from His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia...> As far as I understand, from the point of view of the Orthodox Church, he [Herman of Alaska] is the patron saint of America. <...> I also want to give you this icon (of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos. — Ed.)," the president said.
