In Africa, they called for abandoning the use of Mercator cards
The African Union (AU) has called for the abandonment of the use by Governments and international organizations of world maps projected by geographer and cartographer Gerard Mercator. This was announced on August 15 by Deputy Chairman of the AU Commission Selma Malika Haddadi.
"It may seem like it's just a map, but it really isn't. Mercator's projection creates a false impression that Africa is a "marginal" continent, despite the fact that it is the second largest continent in the world with a population of more than 1 billion people," Haddadi said, as quoted by Reuters.
Haddadi stressed that using such maps creates negative stereotypes about Africa.
In June last year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, responding to a question from an Izvestia correspondent on the sidelines of the SPIEF, said that Africa had repeatedly stressed that it wanted self-respect, an end to colonial and neocolonial practices and the maximum benefit from its rich resources, which it was entitled to, not Europe.
