Two residents of Surgut were sentenced to suspended imprisonment for illegal fishing of sturgeon. This type of fish is listed in the Red Book, the press service of the Ural Transport Prosecutor's Office reported on Friday, August 15.

The incident occurred back in 2023 on the Ob River near the village of Banny. Two men, aged 52 and 53, were fishing in a motorboat. They caught two bream and one Ob sturgeon using a net, which is prohibited as a fishing tool.

The total damage to biological resources amounted to more than 481 thousand rubles — sturgeon and two bream were estimated at 480 thousand rubles. The defendants have already reimbursed the damage. Also, each of the fishermen received five and six years of probation. Their motorboat was confiscated, and the nets were destroyed, writes the news agency " <url>".

Earlier in August, Izvestia reported that new fishing restrictions were being introduced in the Volga basin. The moratorium on roach and roach fishing will be extended, pike fishing will be banned in winter, and kutum fishing in spring. It has been impossible to catch sturgeon in the main waterway of the European part of Russia for 20 years.
