The meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump in Alaska may play a key role in restoring bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington. Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, Professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, told Izvestia on August 15.

"The Putin-Trump summit in Alaska will help bring bilateral relations between Russia and the United States out of the impasse. Our countries are inherently doomed to geopolitical competition, but their rivalry must be carried out within the framework of clear, mutually agreed rules. It is likely that the parties will try to agree on these rules during the upcoming meeting," the expert said.

According to Feldman, the main issue on the agenda will be not so much the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, but also the formation of new contours of strategic security in Europe and the world. He pointed out the need to discuss the issue of extending the Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty (START).

"As for the situation in Ukraine, we should not expect a diplomatic breakthrough here. If the establishment of peace depended only on the will of Russia and the current US administration, the fire would have stopped long ago. Unfortunately, Kiev, London and Brussels had demonstrated a desire to continue the military confrontation long before the meeting between Putin and Trump," the expert stressed.

In addition, Yegor Dibrov, a political scientist and member of the Faculty of Political Science at Lomonosov Moscow State University, added that the current situation demonstrates the illusory nature of the "unity of the West," which hides harsh instruments of pressure on sovereign countries.

"The change in the general political vector of the United States suggests that the "collective West" has problems that need to be addressed," he said.

Dibrov also noted that holding negotiations with the United States is consistent with Russia's national interests and with the provisions stated before the start of the special military operation. He stressed the importance of discussing new provisions within the framework of global security to resolve current conflicts, including the situation in Ukraine.

Putin and Trump will meet at the Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base in Anchorage on August 15 at 22:00 Moscow time. The conflict in Ukraine will be the central topic of discussions between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States.
