Film critic Trofimenko called Balabanov the only brilliant director of the 1990s
Alexey Balabanov is the only brilliant director of Russian cinema in the 1990s and 2000s, and his films should not be banned. This opinion was shared by film critic Mikhail Trofimenko in an interview with Izvestia on August 14.
According to him, Balabanov was an outstanding artist and poet who was able to capture the "noise of time" and accurately show the atmosphere of his era. Trofimenko stressed that Balabanov's films have already become classics.
The critic explained that Balabanov's paintings do not contain "cruelty for the sake of cruelty itself" — the director simply reflected the harsh reality surrounding society. Trofimenko added that the films "Brother", "Morphine", "Cargo 200" and others give an accurate picture of that time.
On the same day, information appeared in the media that Elena Drapeko, a deputy of the State Duma (DG), an Honored Artist of Russia, proposed banning Balabanov's films that do not correspond to spiritual and moral values. However, later, in an interview with Izvestia, Drapeko denied these statements, noting that her words about the ban on Balabanov's films were distorted. According to her, there was a conversation specifically about the film "Cargo-200" and whether it should be shown to schoolchildren as part of lessons.
