At the upcoming meeting of the BRICS member countries, organized by Brazil, it is expected to discuss key measures to strengthen mutual trade in response to the new US duties. This was stated to Izvestia on August 14 by Alexander Khazaridi, an expert of the Polylogue Group, a political scientist.

"Brazil is initiating negotiations between the BRICS countries in response to the new US duties, demonstrating a desire to consolidate the economic positions of the association. Measures to strengthen mutual trade may be proposed at the meeting, including expanding settlements in national currencies, creating alternative payment mechanisms and coordinating retaliatory tariff decisions," the source said.

Khazaridi also said that if the dialogue does not bring the expected results, the BRICS countries are likely to step up their search for new markets and deepen cooperation with other developing economies. This will allow them to reduce their dependence on American measures and strengthen their positions on the global stage.

"In the long term, this may accelerate the restructuring of global trade chains in favor of a multipolar system," the political scientist concluded.

The O Globo newspaper reported on August 13 that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva initiated an online meeting with BRICS members in order to find trade alternatives in the conditions that are developing as a result of the duties imposed by US President Donald Trump. He also clarified that he had already managed to talk with representatives of the alliance from Russia, China and India, as well as plan a conversation with colleagues from the Republic of South Africa (RSA).

Prior to that, on August 3, the Brazilian president called his country not as dependent on the United States "as it once was." He noted that his country is more "calm" from an economic point of view, and also recalled the tendency to resolve issues through diplomacy.
