WSJ: Trump was afraid that Zelensky wanted to disrupt the meeting in Alaska
US President Donald Trump expressed concern that the participation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky during the Alaska summit could disrupt negotiations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. This was reported on August 14 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources.
According to sources, after telephone conversations with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other European leaders, the idea of "direct representation" in the negotiations, including Zelensky's participation, was rejected.
"According to sources familiar with the course of the telephone conversation, Trump expressed concern that Zelensky's presence at the very beginning of the negotiations could disrupt them," the WSJ emphasizes.
Prior to this, European leaders tried to offer participation in the negotiations, in addition to Zelensky, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte or another European leader. However, according to sources among German officials, Trump agreed to first inform Zelensky about the results of the negotiations, and only then inform the other heads of European states.
Zelensky said on August 12 that he did not intend to recognize the results of the negotiations between Russia and the United States in Alaska. In his opinion, it is impossible to talk about Ukraine without Ukraine itself, and such a format allegedly will not be accepted.
On August 8, the American leader announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. In turn, Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region.
