US President Donald Trump feared that the presence of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky could disrupt talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal on August 14, citing sources.

It is noted that initially European officials sought direct representation at the meeting in Alaska. Among the proposed candidates were NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Zelensky.

"According to sources familiar with the course of the telephone conversation, Trump expressed concern that Zelensky's presence at the very beginning of the negotiations could disrupt them," the WSJ emphasizes.

According to the newspaper, because of this, the leaders of European countries refused to demand the participation of the President of Ukraine in the summit.

Zelensky said on August 12 that he did not intend to recognize the results of the negotiations between Russia and the United States in Alaska. In his opinion, it is impossible to talk about Ukraine without Ukraine itself, and such a format allegedly will not be accepted.

On August 8, the American leader announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. In turn, Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region.
