- Brazil has initiated negotiations among BRICS members to find a response to the US duties
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has initiated an online meeting with BRICS members in order to find trade alternatives in the conditions that are developing as a result of the duties imposed by US President Donald Trump. This was reported on August 13 by the newspaper O Globo.
The Brazilian leader made the corresponding statement during an event at his official working residence, the Planalto Palace, where ministers and entrepreneurs were invited.
"Together with BRICS, we are going to hold a teleconference, which is currently being discussed, so that we can discuss what we can do within the framework. <...> We will look for alternatives so that the United States understands that democracy, commercial respect and multilateralism are important to us and must be valid for them," Lula da Silva is quoted as saying in the publication.
He also clarified that he had already managed to talk with representatives of the alliance from Russia, China and India, as well as plan a conversation with colleagues from the Republic of South Africa (RSA).
On August 1, Lula da Silva announced the preparation of a response to the 50% duties imposed by Trump against his country. He said that the government is working on measures to protect the Brazilian economy.
Later, on August 3, the Brazilian president called his country not as dependent on the United States "as it once was." He noted that his country is more "calm" from an economic point of view, and also recalled the tendency to resolve issues through diplomacy.
