Experts called the consequences for the ruble exchange rate and the market from the upcoming summit in Alaska

At the August 15 meeting, the presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, may discuss not only the Ukrainian conflict, but also economic issues, such as anti—Russian sanctions and energy tariffs.

According to experts interviewed by Izvestia, there are three possible outcomes of the negotiations. So, a positive scenario assumes that the leaders of the two countries will sign basic agreements and be able to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. There is also a neutral option — the meeting in Alaska will be more formal, but it will be a big step in resolving the situation. And finally, another scenario is the withdrawal of the parties from the dialogue.

The Moscow Stock Exchange has already reacted to the upcoming meeting: on August 11, the index exceeded 3,000 points for the first time in three and a half months. If a truce is reached and some sanctions are lifted, the indicator may rise to 3.3 thousand points, says Igor Dodonov, an analyst at Finam Financial Group.

In case of failure of negotiations, it can fall to 2.8 thousand points. In addition, the ruble may strengthen with a positive outcome. If results are achieved on the Ukrainian crisis, the dollar exchange rate will drop below 75 rubles. According to Finam analyst Alexander Potavin, this will be more of an emotional market reaction. At the same time, a long-term strengthening of the national currency is unlikely, independent expert Andrey Barkhota is sure. He added: by the end of the year, the exchange rate will reach about 92-95 rubles/$.

If the negotiations between the two heads of state reach an impasse, then in the fall the dollar may cost more than 85 rubles.
