Preparations are continuing in Russia and the United States for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump, which will take place on August 15 in Alaska. The summit will be held in Anchorage, the largest city in the state. Read the Izvestia article about what Putin and Trump can discuss during the meeting and how the European authorities are trying to disrupt the negotiations.

What will Putin and Trump talk about during the Alaska meeting?

During a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders, Trump called the ceasefire in Ukraine the main goal of the meeting with Putin.

"Trump informed President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders that his goals of Friday's summit with Vladimir Putin are to achieve a cease—fire and a better understanding of the possibility of concluding a full-fledged peace agreement," the article says.

According to Axios sources, Trump suggested that an exchange of territories would be necessary as part of a peace agreement between Moscow and Kiev, but stressed that the final decision on this issue remains with Putin and Zelensky. The source added that the American president approved the idea of a trilateral meeting between Russia, the United States and Ukraine.

Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the Center for Security Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences, suggested that easing anti-Russian sanctions could be one of the topics of the upcoming summit in Alaska.

"Putin and Trump will definitely discuss the issue of lifting American sanctions against Russia, at least partially. Washington is also interested in weakening this economic stranglehold, because it itself is suffering losses due to the restrictions imposed," the expert noted.

Blokhin recalled that, according to Kirill Dmitriev, special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), since the start of the special operation to liberate Donbass, the United States has already lost more than $300 billion due to the withdrawal of American companies from Russia.

Will there be other meetings between Putin and Trump after Alaska

Trump expressed hope for another meeting with Putin after the upcoming summit in Alaska.

"If the first meeting goes well, we will hold, I will say, a second meeting. I would like to hold it almost immediately," he said during a visit to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington.

The American leader also allowed the possibility of a trilateral meeting between Russia, the United States and Ukraine.

Ukraine's demands before Putin and Trump's meeting in Alaska

According to the Politico newspaper, on the eve of the meeting between Putin and Trump in Alaska, Ukraine may put forward five demands to resolve the conflict with the Russian Federation.

According to the sources of the publication, Kiev is interested in a cease-fire before the start of territorial negotiations, but without concessions "regarding its borders," security guarantees, reparations from the Russian Federation, the return of prisoners of war and the preservation of anti-Russian sanctions.

Attempts by Ukraine and the EU to disrupt the meeting between Putin and Trump in Alaska

During a briefing on August 13, Alexey Fadeev, Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, pointed to attempts by the European Union (EU) to sabotage the efforts of the Russian side for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine.

"The Europeans verbally support the diplomatic efforts of Washington and Moscow to resolve the crisis over Ukraine. In fact, the European Union is sabotaging," he said, answering a question from Izvestia.

Fadeev stressed that regardless of the outcome of the negotiations on August 15, the EU will continue to support Kiev with weapons and finances, as well as increase sanctions pressure on Russia.

Alexander Kamkin, a German political scientist and senior researcher at the Primakov Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, also suggested that Ukraine and the European Union could stage a military provocation to disrupt the talks between Putin and Trump.

"We can expect a military provocation from Ukraine — attempts by enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups to enter the territory of the Bryansk and Kursk regions, or some kind of provocation in the Baltic Sea, the ears of the British will already be sticking out," he said.

According to the expert, the EU can promise Zelensky more ammunition and funding, as well as support for Ukraine "to the last European" so that he would disrupt any possible agreements between the Russian Federation and the United States.

Trump also accused the American media of trying to discredit the upcoming meeting in Alaska. On the Truth Social social network, he noted that journalists "quote fired losers" such as former national Security adviser John Bolton. The reason for the criticism was Bolton's statement about the "victory of Russia."

"Extremely unscrupulous media outlets are working on my meeting with Putin. Dismissed losers and completely stupid people are constantly quoted, such as John Bolton, who just stated that, despite the fact that the meeting is taking place on American soil, "Putin has already won." What is it anyway? We win at everything," Trump wrote.

In turn, American political scientist Malek Dudakov expressed the opinion that Kiev and its allies are trying to influence Trump to persuade him to take a tougher course towards Russia and thus disrupt the negotiation process.

"It's far from certain that this whole strategy will work. As we can see, the Trump administration is now quite skeptical about the Europeans and their ability to continue confrontation with Russia, and about the Ukrainians," the expert stressed.
