During a video conference with the presidents of Ukraine and the United States, Vladimir Zelensky and Donald Trump, on August 13, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Kiev was ready for negotiations on territorial issues, but the starting point should be the line of military contact.

"Ukraine is ready for negotiations on territorial issues. But then the so—called contact line should be the starting point," Merz said.

He noted that the negotiations should include reliable security guarantees for Kiev and "the opportunity to count on the help of the West in the long term." The Chancellor also confirmed that Germany will continue to support the Ukrainian army.

"Negotiations should be part of the overall transatlantic strategy," Merz stressed.

Earlier in the day, political analyst Thomas Yeager said that the talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump in Alaska could create a "dangerous situation" for Ukraine. According to the expert, Ukraine may be faced with a choice — to agree to the terms and actually capitulate, or to refuse and receive accusations of disinterest in negotiations from the United States. The political scientist stressed that such a scenario is very dangerous for Kiev.

On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. As White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt later clarified, Anchorage will be the site of the summit.
