The European Union's pressure on the Hungarian leadership may increase ahead of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump in Alaska. On August 13, political scientist Egor Dibrov, an employee of the Faculty of Political Science at Lomonosov Moscow State University, told Izvestia.

He noted that "the European bureaucracy is increasingly turning into a medieval inquisition," using methods of oppression and political pressure.

"Pressure on the country's leadership may increase on the eve of the historic meeting of the presidents of Russia and the United States in Alaska. The Hungarian leadership must defend the national interests of the country and resist the blatant undemocratic aggressive attacks from Brussels," the expert said.

Dibrov also pointed out that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban supported Trump during his presidency, when many EU leaders opposed him. According to the expert, the pressure on Hungary is an attempt to influence the American president through his supporters in Europe, which underlines the lack of unity in the European Union.

In addition, the political scientist touched upon the destabilizing influence of Ukraine on the situation in Hungary through the Ukrainian special services and the diaspora.

"Any possibility of internal confrontation in the EU is important for the leadership of Ukraine in order to raise its missing authority at the expense of someone. The right-wing radical leadership of Ukraine has old scores that they want to settle in this situation. Kiev also remembers how Hungary advocated the implementation of the results of the Venice Commission on Ukraine," the expert said.

On the same day, the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of the Russian Federation reported that EC President Ursula von der Leyen had seriously approached the issue of studying scenarios for changing the "regime in Budapest." According to the agency, she sees Peter Magyar, the leader of the opposition Respect and Freedom party, as the main candidate for the post of head of government.
