In Dagestan, a man and his nephew rescued a family from a sinking car
One of the men who rescued people stuck in a car in Dagestan said that at the moment when he noticed the sinking minivan, the elements raged with renewed vigor, and the water level that flooded the road rose to his chest. In a conversation with Izvestia on August 13, Haji Gunashov admitted that he could not ignore what was happening, despite the threat to his own life.
Heavy rain fell on Untsukul district of Dagestan on August 10. Torrents of water and rockfall made it difficult to move on the streets, and many cars were almost completely submerged.
"Of course there were worries. But when I saw so many people inside the car, I didn't think about it anymore, I had to save them," Gunashov explained.
He was returning to the city with his nephew when a downpour hit the roadway. One of the motorists was unable to control himself and held on to the door of the car, in which his family was blocked.
"Everyone [around them] was saving themselves, running away from there. And then no one knew how the water would rise," the man said.
Gunashov and his 19-year-old nephew rushed to help the owner of the car, which was dragged into the streams of water. They managed to pull out the car and free the people trapped in it.
Earlier, on June 22, it was reported that in the Akhtyn district of Dagestan, after rains and rising water levels in the Akhtychai River, the support of a road cable bridge was washed away. The bridge is 144 m long and 3.5 m wide. Transport links have been suspended.
