The psychologist spoke about the phenomenon of happiness fatigue
Cases of patients complaining about anxiety states that occur during periods of objective well-being have become more frequent in psychotherapeutic practice. This phenomenon, referred to in the professional environment as "stability discomfort syndrome", is characterized by a paradoxical reaction of the psyche to the absence of external stressors. Psychologist Valeria Litvintseva told Izvestia about this on August 14.
"Many people experience strange anxiety when a period of calm comes into their lives. Instead of enjoying stability, they start looking for a trick or even unknowingly destroying what they have," she said.
According to the expert, the roots of this phenomenon go back to our childhood and habitual patterns of behavior. If a person is used to living in constant tension, his brain begins to perceive calmness as something suspicious.
"Our psyche is designed in such a way that stress becomes a familiar comfort zone, and real comfort is a frightening unknown," the psychologist adds.
Litvintseva notes that this condition is often accompanied by obsessive thoughts about future troubles, irritability and an inexplicable desire to "blow up" his stable life. According to her, working with such clients always begins with awareness of the problem. It is important to understand that anxiety during good periods is not a weakness, but a signal that we simply cannot do otherwise.
The specialist advises gradually learning to accept calmness as the norm.
"Start small — allow yourself to just be. Without waiting for a trick, without looking for problems. Over time, the brain will rebuild itself, and you will find that you can feel safe and comfortable during the good periods of your life," the psychologist advises.
Litvintseva emphasizes that in difficult cases it is better to consult a specialist. Sometimes the fear of good things hides deep psychological traumas that are difficult to deal with on their own, she concluded.
On June 9, Elena Loseva, a practicing psychologist, shared information about the causes of emotional burnout and ways to overcome it. She noted that for some people, getting enough sleep, setting up a routine, or going on vacation is enough, while others may need the help of specialists to solve this problem.
