- The court decided to recover almost 50 billion rubles from the owner and charterer of Volgoneft-212
The court fully satisfied the claim of Rosprirodnadzor against the owner and charterer of the wrecked tanker Volgoneft-212 and decided to recover 49.5 billion rubles. This was reported on August 13 by a correspondent of Izvestia.
The defendants in the case are Kamatransoil and Kama Shipping, while the plaintiffs are Rosprirodnadzor, the Prosecutor General's Office, the Ministry of Transport and other government agencies.
At the hearing, the plaintiffs' representatives stated that Kama Shipping, the ship's charterer, was responsible for the incident, since the storm was not an insurmountable force and the ship sailed at the wrong time. The court agreed with the arguments and fully satisfied the claim.
Tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 crashed in the Kerch Strait on December 15, 2024 due to bad weather. The incident caused a spill of petroleum products. 27 people were evacuated from both ships, one person died. On behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a working group was set up to coordinate work to eliminate the consequences of the emergency.
On May 23, it was reported that Rosprirodnadzor intends to file lawsuits against the owners of tankers sunk in the Black Sea if they do not voluntarily pay compensation for the damage caused. The Agency sent two letters to the companies.
