- The Foreign Ministry stressed the right to take countermeasures due to the EU's use of Russian assets
Russia has the right to take countermeasures in connection with the use by the European Union (EU) of the country's assets to support Ukraine. This was announced on August 13 by the Deputy Director of the Department of Information and Press Russian Foreign Ministry Alexey Fadeev.
"Any attempts on our property will entail a painful response for the expropriators. Russia reserves the right to take countermeasures in full accordance with the principle of reciprocity in international relations," he said during a briefing.
According to Fadeev, attempts by the European Union to use Russian assets in the interests of Kiev will not help the Ukrainian side and will not have an impact on changing the course of the special military operation.
On August 11, the European Commission allocated Ukraine the third tranche of €1.6 billion from the proceeds from the frozen assets of the Russian Federation. The first tranche was received in July 2024, and the second in April 2025.
The next day, on August 12, the European Council published a resolution on the continuation by the leaders of the EU countries of the sanctions policy against Russia against the background of the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump. It was noted that the EU states also expressed their intention to continue providing comprehensive support to Kiev.
Switzerland joined the European Union's anti-Russian sanctions on the same day and added 14 people and 41 legal entities to the list. Thus, the restrictions affected Russian and international companies operating ships that are allegedly involved in the transportation of Russian energy resources, oil traders from Russia and suppliers of the Russian military-industrial complex. 105 vessels were also placed under restrictive measures.
