- The Guardian pointed to a record increase in the number of destructions in Europe due to fires.
Forest fires in Europe have burned more than 400,000 hectares, which is 87% more than the average for this time of year over the past two decades. This was reported on August 13 by The Guardian newspaper.
"Tens of thousands of people die from extreme heat in Europe every year. According to researchers, by the end of the century, from 8 thousand to 80 thousand people per year will die from dangerous temperatures in Europe," the article says.
The heat wave is breaking temperature records across Europe and leading to larger-scale forest fires. So, on August 11, a new maximum temperature was set in the south-west of France, where temperatures above +40 degrees were recorded. Meteorologists note that even the "unprecedented maximum temperatures" were 12 degrees above normal.
In Croatia, the maximum temperature was set in Sibenik (+39.5 degrees) and Dubrovnik (+38.9 degrees), while large forest fires raged along the coast of the country. Temperature records were also exceeded in Canada and Iraq.
The newspaper Le Parisien reported on August 6 that a forest fire in the department of Aude in the south of France has become the largest in the republic for at least the last 20 years. The spread of the fire was facilitated by strong wind gusts, some of them reaching 60 km/h, as well as dryness on the ground and humidity levels of less than 25%.
On August 7, BFMTV channel noted that a large fire in France in 24 hours covered more than 16 thousand hectares of vegetation in the Aude region. It was clarified that at least one person was killed as a result. The fire was later contained.
