- Georgian mercenary convicted in absentia for involvement in the conflict on the side of Ukraine
A mercenary from Georgia, Aleko Elisashvili, was convicted in absentia for participating in the Ukrainian conflict on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was announced on August 13 by the press service of the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation.
"The court sentenced Elisashvili in absentia to six years of imprisonment to be served in a high—security penal colony," the department said in a statement on its Telegram channel.
According to investigators, in March 2022, Elisashvili joined an armed group in Ukraine. He completed a military training course and was provided with personal firearms and ammunition. Elisashvili, for a monetary reward, carried out orders from the Ukrainian command, participated as a mercenary in combat operations against members of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
Elisashvili was found guilty in absentia under Part 3 of Article 359 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Participation of a mercenary in an armed conflict"). He is on the international wanted list.
Alexei Zhuravlev, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma's Defense Committee, told Izvestia on July 14 that the elimination of mercenaries in the Armed Forces of Ukraine was a legitimate task and the only possible outcome. The parliamentarian added that every mercenary who came to participate in the "safari for Russians" should not forget that he himself could become the target of such a "hunt".
