About 70 people were injured as a result of protests in Serbia
As a result of the protests in Serbia, almost 70 people were injured in Vrbas, including 16 policemen. This was announced on August 13 by Police Director Dragan Vasilyevich to the national television of Serbia, RTS.
It is specified that the incident occurred on the evening of August 12, when a group of citizens protested in front of the building of the Serbian Progressive Party and its supporters. According to Vasilyevich, 16 police officers were injured in Vrbas alone, and 52 citizens turned to medical institutions for help.
"The police detained several people at night and in the morning, the situation in Vrbasa calmed down only this morning, when a crackdown took place around 6 a.m.," Vasilyevich said.
Another protest rally took place on the streets of Belgrade on August 11. At that time, the protesters asked for the arrest of the President of the republic, Alexander Vucic, after unknown persons doused the entrances of three opposition leaders with paint. The crowd was bombarded with plastic balls (cartridges), and arrests were made of particularly active protesters who provoked others.
The anti-government protests, which are attended by the Serbian opposition, began after 15 people died in November 2024 as a result of the collapse of the railway station in Novi Sad. The protesters blocked bridges and roads. On July 4, Vucic called on those who took to the streets not to block the city, threatening to use counteraction measures.
Later, on August 1, the President of Serbia called an emergency meeting of the Republic's Security Council in connection with the detention of former Construction Minister Tomislav Momirovic, who was involved in the reconstruction of the train station where the collapse occurred.
