Our body's ability to regulate body temperature depends on the activity of certain genes. The geneticist of the National Center for Genetic Research (MyGenetics) told about it on August 13 Anastasia Sivakova.

As the ambient temperature rises, the body actively gets rid of heat, increasing sweating and dilating blood vessels. In cold conditions, processes aimed at generating heat are triggered: shivering and the work of brown adipose tissue capable of generating heat effortlessly.

"Genes related to temperature perception and heat exchange mechanisms have been identified, which may explain individual and population differences. Among them are the genes TRPV1, TRPV3, UCP1 and TRPM8, as well as MYOF, LONP2, MKL1, CPT1A," she told the Newspaper.Ru" geneticist.

The TRPV1 gene contains a receptor responsible for the burning of chili peppers. It is activated at high temperature and plays a role in temperature regulation and pain sensation.

"The TRPV3 gene is also responsible for the perception of heat and is involved in the skin's response to heat and chemical stimuli. <...> Adaptation to low temperatures occurs due to the UCP1 gene. It <...> is responsible for producing heat without muscle activity," Sivakova clarified.

The TRPM8 gene is responsible for creating an ion channel that is sensitive to cold and menthol. It is thanks to him that we feel cold and can react to low temperatures.

"People with genetic variants that increase resistance to cold can feel comfortable in low temperatures, while those with genes that promote better adaptation to heat prefer a warm climate," the geneticist concluded.

On August 12, Olga Stepanova, pediatrician at JSC "Medicine", spoke about the causes of the children's illness in the summer. According to her, one of the main causes of summer colds is overheating.
